A Household Treasure.

TO HAVE that in the household which will properly mould the mind, and stimulate to noble actions, is worth more to a family than shining rubies. Gold and silver may purchase sordid pleasure, but the value of a good book is above estimate. Its influence upon young minds, too, is far greater than upon those of more mature age. There is not a father in the land who does not desire his children to be surrounded by the very best influence possible. And what mother can be indifferent to the welfare of her offspring in this respect?
To provide for this most desirable condition of the family, the publishers of the SIGNS OF THE TIMES have printed a series of four volumes, entitled "Sabbath Readings," which contain some of the very best lessons for the family circle, such as will inculcate principles of obedience to parents, kindness and affection to brothers and sisters, benevolence to the poor, as also all the requirements of the gospel. These excellent lessons are not in the form of dry treatises, but are short relations of instances which, in an interesting way, illustrate principles of truth and duty, and instill them into the minds of the young. They are, at the same time, free from everything of a sectarian or denominational character. The quality of the matter they contain may be inferred from the headings of a few chapters, which are here inserted: Father, Don't Go—Girls, Help Father—My Mother's Voice—A Sermon for Girls—The Infidel Captain—The Cross Family—A Slave's Prayer—Confide in Mother—The Best Fun—How to Get the Best Places—Hasty Words—My Good Old-Fashioned Mother—Ruined at Home—The Boy and His Spare Moments—Why He Didn't Smoke—What One Lie Did, etc.
A finely executed work is offered with these volumes, which is invaluable to any Bible-reading family. It is a "Bird's Eye View of the Holy Land," 24x36 inches. Every town, mountain, lake, etc., is numbered. The names of these are found in the index with corresponding numbers, so that any one can readily learn the distance from Jerusalem to any prominent point, and locate every place in the Holy Land. It will teach many important lessons about Palestine that no ordinary map can teach; hence is indispensable in the study of Sabbath-school lessons. It is, in fact, an exact copy of the large twelve dollar work, and would make a fine ornament to any house, as a work of art.
The publishers will send the four volumes, containing 1,551 pages, nicely packed in a convenient box, together with the "Bird's Eye View," for $2.50. At these low figures orders are expected to come in rapidly. Address SIGNS OF THE TIMES, Oakland, Cal.
