Trials and Comfort

WHILE Peter was with Jesus in the chill of the outer night, he was more favorably circumstanced, whether he realized it or not, than when he was with the officers of the high priest’s palace, near a warm fire. In the one case he was ready to die for Jesus; in the other, he was ready to deny him. We owe more to our deprivations and trials than we realize. If we were more comfortably off than we are, we might lose in character more than we gained in comfort. It is better to shiver in Christ’s service than to grow warm among his enemies. There is nothing for which we have cause of greater gratitude than that the Lord secures to us enough of trials and discomforts to keep us from growing cold in our hearts while our bodies grow warm.—S.
