McNamara Brothers Arrested for Bombing
By Editor
April 22 John J. McNamara, secretary-treasurer of the International Association of Bridge, Structural, and Ornamental Iron Workers, was arrested at Indianapolis while attending a secret meeting of the executive committee of his union, on the charge of planning the destruction of the Los Angeles Times, and other outrages; with furnishing money for the same; and with sending men to carry out his plans. His brother James B. McNamara of Cincinnati, and Ortie E. McManigal of Chicago, have also been arrested, the former charged with the explosion of the Times building October 1, 1910, resulting in the loss of twenty-one lives, and the latter with similar crimes. The case against them has been engineered by detective W. J. Burns, who declares that he has a perfect case against the men. Labor leaders say that their arrest is legalized kidnapping and is for the purpose of injuring the cause of union labor. It would be well for an inflammable public to possess their souls in patience, and await the evidence of a due process of law before jumping at conclusions either way.
