DESCRIPTION

The governmental principle of Rome was the abject slavery of the mind, while the governmental principle of the United States was the absolute freedom of the mind.
Has the United States forgotten that principle? Has she fallen because of following in the steps of her profligate sister? Is history repeating itself in the dealing of the United States with those of her subjects who are unable to protect themselves? Is her government any longer "a government of the people, by the people, and for the people?" Has that first Constitutional Amendment, which says "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof," been overlooked? Such questions as these and a multitude of others of equal interest and importance to every American citizen are answered clearly and exhaustively in this interesting volume.
The author believes in the complete separation of Church and State and brings in a long series of instances where a failure to thus separate them has resulted in persecution and the shedding of innocent blood. In this connection he reproduces from early Colonial history accounts of how even those who fled from the Old Country that they might worship God according to the dictates of their own conscience, became the most bitter persecutors of those who differed from their belief. These persecutions went so far that women were tied to carts and whipped through New England villages in the depth of winter, while others were imprisoned and hung.
That the same spirit is being invited back to this country to-day through the interpretation and manipulation of her laws, the author proves beyond the possibility of successful contradiction.
