Song of Winter

By Benjamin Phillips
The cold winds blow, The shifting snow Fills all the valley lands below. On mountains high, Where clouds whirl by, There is no sign that spring is nigh.
No song of bird Or cheerful word Among the wintry wastes is heard; But hungry deer Devoid of fear Trail down ravines and hillsides near.
Sometimes the howl Of wolves that prowl Resounds to mock the hooting owl— O winter bleak— Both strong and weak Must bear alike thy whim and freak!
But soon again O'er peak and plain Delightful spring shall come to reign; We then shall praise In many ways The One who gave these cheerful days.
