"LIVING FOUNTAINS AND BROKEN CISTERNS."

A DISCUSSION of education is not a new thing in these days; but a discussion which presents the right kind of education, as well as showing the utter futility of the wrong, is what is needed. The trouble with most treatises of education is that the aim, the object, the end are wholly of earth, whereas the true education ought to be not only for time but eternity, not alone for association with man, but with God and heavenly beings.
There lies before us a book, entitled "Living Fountains or Broken Cisterns: An Educational Problem for Protestants." It discusses under fifteen heads the great educational question in the light of past history, sacred and profane. These headings are: "God the Source of Wisdom," "The Heavenly School," "The Edenic School," "The History of Fifteen Centuries," "The School of Abraham," "Education in Israel," "The Educational System of the Pagan World," "Christ the Educator of Educators," "Education in the Early Church," "The Papacy—an Educational Problem," "Education of the Middle Ages," "The Sixteenth-Century Reformation an Educational Reform," "The Reaction after the Educational Reformation," "America and the Educational Problem," "Christian Education."
It will be seen that the scope of the work is large. The subject discussed is of tremendous importance. The issue is vital to both persons and nations. It is in the light of these considerations that Prof. E. A. Sutherland, president of Battle Creek College, Battle Creek, Mich., treats this question. The book ought to be read by all parents and teachers. It is published by the Review and Herald Publishing Co., Battle Creek, Mich.; neatly bound in cloth; 428 pp.; price, $1.50.
