McKinley and the Canteen

Many Methodists are greatly agitated and indignant because President McKinley, a Methodist, a licensed local preacher, one paper tells us, does not suppress "the canteen," as he, the commander-in-chief of the army, has the authority to do. And certainly what Dr. S. C. Swallow, editor of the Pennsylvania Methodist, says, every Christian must admit to be true: "Wm. McKinley is as much bound to hold sacred his church vows to abstain from intoxicants and to maintain a hostile attitude toward the liquor traffic, as is the humblest man among the 3,000,000 of our church membership." Duty excuses no man. God will hold the king as responsible as He will the subject; for the Lord is "no respecter of persons."
