Peace Efforts and Earthquake in Japan
Reports from Washington indicate that President Roosevelt is making a direct move toward bringing about peace in the Orient. He has had several conferences with the ambassadors of the powers concerned, and there is considerable activity among the ministers of other powers. But from Russia herself there comes no word but that which declares that the czar is unalterably determined to continue the war until Russia shall retrieve her prestige. A disastrous earthquake is reported to have taken place in Japan, extending from the province of Hiroshima to the straits of Shimonoseki. One report states that 100 persons were killed, and 290 injured. Many buildings have been thrown down, and the inhabitants are living in the open.
