Alcohol and the Moorish Question

Alcoholic drink is playing a part in the Moorish question. The introduction of intoxicants has aggravated all sorts of troubles, and a few weeks ago at the Algeciras Conference, the Moorish delegate proposed that an almost prohibitive tax be placed upon the importation of alcoholic beverages. The proposal was unanimously rejected "with mingled feelings of amusement and annoyance," so the European papers say. The Christian nations of Europe are, therefore, forcing this alcoholic drink into a land where it is prohibited both by custom and religion. Is it any wonder that Mohammedans and Hindus are hard to reach with the Christian religion?
