A Striking Picture of the Great San Francisco Fire,

Taken April 18, 1906.

A GENERAL view of San Francisco's devastating holocaust, taken from Nob Hill, looking toward the Ferries. The sweep of the picture is from near the foot of Telegraph Hill to Howard and Folsom Streets, including several square miles. The square eight-story building in the center is the Cowell Building. The building with the tall tower at the right is the Hall of Justice. Both of these were badly damaged by the earthquake. To the right of the Hall of Justice stand the New York Life Insurance, the Kohl (Haywards), Merchant's Exchange, and Mills Buildings. All the buildings in the foreground were subsequently destroyed by the conflagration.
