Blessed

CONCERNING Jesus, the record in the fifth chapter of Matthew says: "And seeing the multitudes, He went up into a mountain: and when He was set, His disciples came unto Him: and He opened His mouth, and taught them, saying, Blessed." This word, which begins the Sermon on the Mount, holds the same place in the book of Psalms. Although it is one of the common words in the Bible, yet we may not say it is the one best understood. It has varied meanings. It may mean to pronounce holy, as when God blessed the seventh day. It may mean to praise, as the psalmist says, "Bless ye the Lord." It may mean to make happy or joyous, also to grant divine favor and to consecrate. It is the opposite of all that is sorrowful, discouraging, and hopeless; the opposite of all that is evil, false, hateful, and detestable.
