THE LOVE OF THE WORLD.

Behold, the world is withered in itself, yet flourisheth in our hearts, everywhere death, everywhere grief, everywhere desolation. On every side we are smitten; on every side filled with bitterness, and yet with the blind mind of carnal desire, we love her bitterness. It flieth and we follow it, it falleth, yet we stick to it; and because we cannot enjoy it falling, we fall with it, and enjoy it fallen.—S. Gregory.
