Peace Triumphant

By Worthie Harris Holden
THE weary heart pours forth its plaintive longing For better days, for kindlier days than these; Nor can the world, with fevered fancies thronging, Utopian scenes of peace triumphant seize. But better far than any mortal dreaming, And brighter than the sun, o'er shades of night Will wake those visions everlasting, seeming Like wondrous splendor-seas to flood our sight. And never can we fathom all their story, And never can we long more bliss to gain; Nor ever shall the aged one grow hoary, With failing sight, or limbs inured to pain. We yearn for these — the better days of heaven; We sigh that weeping dominates our night. To man the gracious, heavenly boon is given, Though earth-confined, to be the child of light. So good our God to lure us through our sorrow, That we may anchor all our hopes above; For soon He comes to bring the joyful morrow,— Immortal days of never ending love.
