2743.— The Green and the Dry.

What does the "green and the dry tree" symbolize in Luke 23:31? C. K.
The general understanding of the text is that the green tree is symbolic of our Lord Himself, and the dry tree, of the impenitent wicked. If all these things can come to Him, the fruitful tree of God, upon whom rested the weight and burden of the sins of the whole world, what would be done with those who had filled up the cup of their iniquity to the full? Now, He, the green tree, was suffering for them, but when that time came that He was utterly rejected, then they would say to the mountains, "Fall on us," they would bring wrath upon them to the uttermost.
