Life and Suffering

A FIDDLE string coiled up in a music shop seems a useless thing. Kubelik, Sarasate, and Paganini united could not bring a single note of music from it in that condition.
But it possesses latent possibilities. Attach it to a fiddle, screw it tight, almost to breaking point, and ravishing strains that sway multitudes can be brought from it. We sometimes wonder why suffering is necessary, forgetting that the Master Musician is tuning us up to bring the best out of our lives. The string that knows no tension knows no music, and the life without suffering produces no melody.—John Birrell.
