The Salutation of Peace

"Peace be unto you" was a common salutation among the Hebrews. It was often a mere form, having no meaning aside from the custom of the day. Jesus, however, did not thus use it. When He said to His disciples, "Peace be unto you," He meant something more than a mere conformity to a worldly custom. When He uttered the words, "Peace I leave with you, My peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you" (John 14: 27), He taught a great truth, which comes down through the ages to us like a benediction.
