The Apostle says, We must not go out of the world, but overcome it. The monk and nun say, Leave the world, or it will overcome you. The Apostle says, "Fight manfully the good fight of faith;" the monk and nun say, Your only safety is in flight. This surely is not fighting but flying. He only is "a good soldier" who keeps his post on the field of battle, bravely encounters the enemy, "contends even unto blood," if need be, "striving against sin," and knowing that God is with him, reaches forth unto the crown with the shout of expiring victory.
