Excellent Thought.

John Mason, a courtier, who flourished in the reigns of Henry VIII, Edward VI, Queen Mary, and Queen Elizabeth, said on his death-bed, to those about him: "I have lived to see four sovereigns, and have been privy counsellor to each of them. I have seen the most remarkable things in foreign parts, and have been present at most State transactions for thirty years together, and I have learned this, after so many years' experience, that seriousness is the greatest wisdom, temperance the best physic, and a good conscience the best estate. All things else forsake me besides my God, my duty, and my prayers."
