The Church and the New Sect

"THERE once sprang up within the church of God 'a sect,' which was 'everywhere spoken against,' and that, not by the heathen, but by the church itself. It appealed to the Oracles of God, but the people to whom these Oracles were committed, and especially those who sat in Moses' seat, as their authorized expounders, rejected the appeal, and pronounced the appellants guilty of heresy. Priests and Levites, Scribes and Pharisees, Saducees and Herodians, Doctors and Lawyers, though differing on almost everything else, cordially agreed in condemning the new sect, root and branch. It was a tremendous prima facie presumption against it, no doubt; but the sect was right and the church was wrong, notwithstanding." —Minton.
