SATAN labors, and with great success, to deceive mankind into the idea that the adoption of one sin or vice is pardoned, or at least excused, if they refrain from others. In this way did he work upon Herod, who, though living in incest with Herodias, yet was very tender and scrupulous about an oath—"Nevertheless, for the oath's sake." O, what a conscientious king!
