The Magnitude of an Inch of Rain

WE speak very slightingly of an inch of rain—in fact, even of ten or twelve inches. How many appreciate the magnitude of an inch of rain? Not many we imagine, else they would esteem it more highly. A computation shows that there are 6,572,650 square inches in an acre of land; so that an inch depth of rain on an acre yields 6,572,650 cubic inches of water, which, at 277,274 cubic inches to the gallon, makes 22,622.5 gallons, or 226,225 pounds, equal to 100,993 tons, nearly 101,000 tons per acre.
