The Jug

The Jug.—The jug is a most singular utensil. A pail, tumbler, or decanter, can be rinsed, and you can satisfy yourself by optical proof, that it is clean; but the jug has but a hole in the top, and the interior is all darkness. No eye penetrates it, no hand moves the surface. You can clean it only by putting in water, shaking it up, and pouring it out. If the water comes out clean, you judge you have succeeded in cleaning the jug and vice versa. Hence, the jug is like the human heart. No mortal can ever look into its recesses, and you can only judge of its purity, by what comes from it.
