An Ex-Slave Reclaims His Son

An ex-slave applied the other day to a lawyer in Maryland for the restoration of his boy of sixteen, who had been legally apprenticed by his former master. In reply to the lawyer's question whether he was capable of taking care of the boy, the father said: "Well, massa, I rather tinks I'se capable as him; for, you see dat ole massa has done gone and hired the boy out fur fou' dollars a month and put de money in his pocket, and I spec's I's capable of dat kind of kere, any ways."
