1 Chronicles 6:1

The sons of Levi; Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.

The three sons of Levi are Gershon, Kohath, and Merari, and this naming begins a long list of Levi's descendants. The verse stands in the genealogy portion in 1 Chronicles 4-6 within the opening chapters that record the tribes. Those opening chapters give particular attention to the priesthood. They cover much the same record as Samuel except for the genealogies, and belong with the account of David's work, the division of his armies, his virtues and mistakes, and God's mercy and guidance.

The genealogical records preserve hereditary descent, which was needed after the exile to establish land inheritance and the hereditary duties of temple service. Levi's genealogy was preserved unbroken because the Aaronic priesthood continued until it was superseded by Christ's priesthood. The genealogies show that God is particular and keeps a faithful record of every soul in heaven. Though the list's names are unfamiliar and difficult to pronounce, it shows that God remembers each person by name even when people have long forgotten them, which gives comfort to those who feel like failures.
