The Queen of Sheba Meets King SolomonBible World

1 Kings 10:1

And when the queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon concerning the name of the LORD, she came to prove him with hard questions.

The fame that reached the queen of Sheba joined Solomon's name inseparably with the name of the Lord. She came to Jerusalem to prove him with hard, difficult questions and to seek answers from him. She came to hear his wisdom in order to gain knowledge for herself. She came also to see his works and the temple he had built. Her visit took place early in his reign, when his rule was wise and strictly just.

Solomon answered all her questions, and in doing so found opportunity to explain the source and character of his wisdom. Their discussion ranged over the mysteries of nature, including plants and animals and inanimate creation. His own study of nature had led him to recognize the wisdom of God as the God of nature, and that study had deepened his love for God and his knowledge of Him. Through answering her he taught her that his wisdom came from God as Creator and ruler of all things.

The encounter was meant to turn the praise of men away from Solomon himself and direct it toward God. Her visit shows how the influence of Israel opened the way for people from other nations to seek truth and to encounter the knowledge of God. Solomon taught visitors from many lands that God is the Creator, and they went away with new impressions of the living God and began to learn lessons from nature. What she heard and saw of his wisdom surpassed what had been reported to her.
