1 Samuel 31:1
Now the Philistines fought against Israel: and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell down slain in mount Gilboa. Now the Philistines fought against Israel: and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell down slain in mount Gilboa.
The verse belongs to a renewed war between Israel and the Philistines, in which the Philistines encamped at Shunem while Saul's forces were at Mount Gilboa. It records Israel's defeat in that conflict. The battle was fought on the slopes of Mount Gilboa, where the army of Israel fled before the Philistines and many Israelites were slain. The engagement ended in defeat.
In that defeat Saul fought desperately while his sons and soldiers fell around him. He faced the Philistine army with fear and trembling because he felt abandoned and defenseless without God.
