1 Samuel 9:1

Now there was a man of Benjamin, whose name was Kish, the son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Bechorath, the son of Aphiah, a Benjamite, a mighty man of power.

This verse opens the account of Israel's demand for a king, when all the elders gathered at Ramah and asked Samuel for a king to judge them like all the nations because he was old and his sons did not walk in his ways. The demand arose from discontent and pride and deliberate purpose, censuring Samuel and seeking to set him aside, and Samuel carried it to the Lord alone in prayer for counsel.

Kish was a Benjamite. He was Saul's father, a powerful and wealthy chief. Saul, Kish's son, was chosen by Jehovah to be Israel's king. His high family standing was consistent with his being sent to work as a husbandman alongside his father.
