1 Thessalonians 4:1

Furthermore then we beseech you, brethren, and exhort you by the Lord Jesus, that as ye have received of us how ye ought to walk and to please God, so ye would abound more and more.

Believers have already received instruction on how they ought to walk, and are not left to devise the way for themselves. That received teaching defines the path of their daily conduct.

They are to live in that instructed way so as to please God, making practical godliness the aim and measure of life. This pleasing of God is not a single act but a faithful way of life to be continued. They are to keep growing in that conduct with ever-increasing faithfulness, abounding more and more.

This beseeching and exhortation comes by and under the authority of the Lord Jesus, in His name and through Him. Its immediate context identifies sanctification as God's will for those so exhorted. The call rests with particular force upon physicians in their life and work.
