1 Timothy 1:1

Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the commandment of God our Saviour, and Lord Jesus Christ, which is our hope;

Paul's charge to Timothy rests on the command of God our Saviour and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Under that divine authority men are to pray everywhere lifting up holy hands free from anger and doubt.
Women professing godliness are to dress in modest apparel with reverence and self-control, adorned with good works rather than braided hair, gold, pearls, or expensive clothing.
Jesus Christ is our hope, the believer's only hope, with all hope of eternal life coming through Him as the only hope of perishing souls.

He is also the helper and the crown of rejoicing.
Trusting Him as hope goes with humility, for He humbled Himself in becoming human, and people are to humble themselves before God and let Christ shape their minds, dispositions, and characters.
People should therefore hold fast to Him rather than fastening their trust and dependence on a human worker.
Gospel sermons must therefore present Him so that perishing souls see Him as their only hope.
