2 Chronicles 21:1

Now Jehoshaphat slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David. And Jehoram his son reigned in his stead.

2 Chronicles 21:1 marks the death and burial of Jehoshaphat and the beginning of the reign of his son Jehoram in his place. Jehoshaphat was the best of the kings of Judah, whose reign was good and included reforms. The succession from the good king to his wicked son shows how Jehoshaphat's kindly but misdirected alliance with the house of Ahab corrupted his own household.

Through that alliance Jehoram married the idolatrous daughter of wicked Ahab and Jezebel, and through her was led away into idolatry. He began his reign by destroying all his brothers, the sons of Jehoshaphat. He then led the people away from the worship of God to idolatry.

He lost dominion, so that Edom which had been subject to Judah revolted and Libnah revolted, because God could no longer impress His fear on subject peoples. His career as king was short and his end was fearful, after a brief reign of eight years. He died of an incurable disease, departing without being desired and refused burial in the sepulcher of the kings, to be followed by his youngest son Ahaziah.
