Deuteronomy 11:1

Therefore thou shalt love the LORD thy God, and keep his charge, and his statutes, and his judgments, and his commandments, alway.

The command belongs to Moses' rehearsal of God's instruction to Israel before they entered Canaan, calling God's people to love Him and keep His commands and judgments continually. It was Christ Himself who gave this requirement, enshrouded in the pillar of cloud as the visible Leader of Israel in the wilderness wanderings, and He required the same when He came among them in person, so its principles are unchanged. To love the Lord God is to always and continually keep His charge and statutes and judgments and commandments, in obedience to all He has commanded, with every direction carefully observed from the greatest to what may seem the least.

The obedience it calls for is an enduring and continuing duty, to be kept always. It stands as witness that God's law never changes, which in this connection includes keeping the Sabbath as God commanded. It is a lesson of the greatest importance given as verily to God's people today as to Israel, that obedience to God's commandments brings blessing, while disobedience and turning aside to go after other gods brings a curse. God will uphold His word when His people, including their leaders, depart from His commands.

The verse calls for a cleaving to the Lord and a living connection with Him today, and it gives instruction needed to understand God's dealings with His people. It means much to every soul carrying responsibilities in sanitarium work, calling leaders and workers to purify their souls from commonness and to become intelligent, spiritual workers. This is done by setting before children and households an example in word and deportment that leads to consecrated loving service, by praying and sanctifying God in heart and life, and by putting away carelessness, cheapness of speech, and frivolity.
