Ezekiel 1:1

Now it came to pass in the thirtieth year, in the fourth month, in the fifth day of the month, as I was among the captives by the river of Chebar, that the heavens were opened, and I saw visions of God.

Ezekiel 1:1 introduces the prophet's vision given while he was among the captives by the river Chebar. It opens the first two chapters, which are to be carefully studied for their lessons for every workman about God's work and its workers. The wheels within wheels and living creatures in that vision look like confusion to finite human sight but are under the direction of infinite wisdom, with God's hand at work among the wheels. God brings perfect order out of the confusion, with every wheel working in its right place in perfect harmony with every other part of the machinery.

God is the mighty worker who directs His work, while human agents have their appointed parts and must depend on Him rather than seek power or control. The vision shows that heaven is closely connected with events on earth and that God cares for those who are loyal to Him. It shows that the world has a ruler who holds coming events, the destiny of nations, and the concerns of His church in His own charge.
