The word of the Lord coming to Ezekiel here opens God's message of judgment upon Zedekiah that brings God's earthly kingdom to an end. Zedekiah was the last king in David's line. He had been made subject to the king of Babylon under a solemn covenant made before God to render loyal allegiance, but he broke that covenant.
The passage continuing through verse 21 sets forth that covenant-breaking and God's judgment on him as the profane wicked prince of Israel, joined to the command to remove the diadem and take off the crown. The kingdom was thereby made subject to Babylon and then overturned successively through Babylon, Medo-Persia, Grecia, and Rome. It shall be no more on earth until the coming of the one whose right it is, Jesus, to whom at the end of this world God will give the throne of his father David to reign over the house of Jacob forever.
