Ezekiel 6:1

And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,

The verse introduces a message from the Lord coming to Ezekiel. It belongs to his prophetic work among Israel's captives, where he delivered warnings and reproof after God had revealed His glory to strengthen him against fear of the people. He served as God's mouthpiece among the captives in Babylonia by the river Chebar while Jeremiah prophesied in Jerusalem.

The verse presents him as a human messenger and instrument through whom God spoke, so that the prophetic message given through him is also God's word. The Lord's words were also the prophet's words, with God speaking through a human messenger with his human limitations, as a musician plays through different instruments.

The word announces that God will destroy Israel's high places and that they shall know that He is the Lord when their slain lie upon every high hill. It warns of judgment for manifold trusted sins in which high and fenced strongholds throughout the land would come down and be covered with the dead as proof that God had deserted His people in anger. This was fulfilled in the Roman conquest ending with Masada, a fortress on a very high rock where nine hundred and sixty slain lay, terminating the subjection of all Judea.
