Genesis 14:1
And it came to pass in the days of Amraphel king of Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of nations; And it came to pass in the days of Amraphel king of Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of nations;
The listing of kings opens with Chedorlaomer identified as king of Elam, whose move into Canaan with his allied kings to put down the revolting princes sets everything that follows in motion. He did not come alone but marched in confederacy with Amraphel, Arioch, and Tidal against the kings of Canaan. Those allied invaders overcame the Canaanite kings in battle and took captives and spoil from the land. Among those carried away were Lot and his family, whose capture created the crisis that drew Abraham into the conflict.
Though his own band was greatly inferior in numbers, Abraham pursued and rescued those captives from the Elamites and their allies, defeating far superior forces. That victory made plain to the people of Sodom that it was divine power that had made him conqueror. His generous handling of the recovered prisoners and of the spoil further displayed before them the superiority of the faith he honored.
