Genesis 31:1
And he heard the words of Laban’s sons, saying, Jacob hath taken away all that was our father’s; and of that which was our father’s hath he gotten all this glory. And he heard the words of Laban’s sons, saying, Jacob hath taken away all that was our father’s; and of that which was our father’s hath he gotten all this glory.
Jacob heard the words of Laban's sons charging that he had taken away all that belonged to their father and that from what had been their father's he had gotten all his wealth and greatness. Their accusation was false, springing from envy at Jacob's steadily increasing prosperity. At the same time Jacob observed that Laban's countenance toward him was not as favorable as before, a change that showed growing hostility throughout Laban's household.
Laban himself was selfish, caring only to enrich himself by means of Jacob's faithful labors. The threatening tone of the sons' words led Jacob to fear they might attempt to seize his property by force. He would have left the crafty Laban long before, but he remained because he dreaded meeting Esau.
