Jacob and Esau Embrace With Their Familiesby KandD

Genesis 33:1

And Jacob lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, Esau came, and with him four hundred men. And he divided the children unto Leah, and unto Rachel, and unto the two handmaids.

Jacob lifted his eyes and saw Esau coming toward him with four hundred men, and that sight opens the peaceful meeting and reconciliation that follows. Esau was advancing with his armed force with the intention of killing Jacob. God changed Esau's purpose and impressed him so that he could not harm Jacob.

While Jacob wrestled through the night, an angel was sent to Esau in his sleep and showed him in a dream Jacob's twenty years as an exile fearing for his life, his grief over his dead mother, his humility, and the angels of God surrounding him. That vision left Esau with no desire to harm him when they met. On waking Esau told his men the dream and commanded them that none should injure Jacob, because God, the God of his father, was with him.

The threatening force of four hundred men was made powerless before Jacob in his lameness. Only when Jacob fell crippled and helpless upon the breast of the covenant Angel did he know the victory of conquering faith and receive the standing of a prince with God. Surrender of the will, though bitter and painful to the stubborn heart, is profitable because it exchanges the lower for the higher and the earthly for the spiritual. By yielding the will it is received back purified and joined to the divine, so that strength comes out of weakness.
