Genesis 40:1
And it came to pass after these things, that the butler of the king of Egypt and his baker had offended their lord the king of Egypt. And it came to pass after these things, that the butler of the king of Egypt and his baker had offended their lord the king of Egypt.
Genesis 40:1 introduces Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, together with his chief butler and his chief baker. The butler and the baker had offended their lord, provoking Pharaoh to anger and offense against them. For that offense they were put in prison, in the same place where Joseph was still confined.
The verse begins the prison account that follows Joseph's unjust confinement. In that prison the two offenders came under Joseph's charge, opening the sequence of their dreams and differing outcomes told in the rest of the chapter. Though humbled by imprisonment, Joseph was not degraded there, for he continued to fear God and served his suffering fellow prisoners.
