Genesis 43:1

And the famine was sore in the land.

The famine was sore in Canaan where Jacob lived, and its severity forced his sons to travel to Egypt to buy grain. It did not quickly ease but continued and remained severe until the supply they had carried back from Egypt was consumed and nearly gone. That exhaustion of the former provision left Jacob's family once more in urgent need of food and facing hunger again.

The continuing drought and scarcity pressed upon Jacob and his sons, with their households calling for food and the children crying for bread. This want compelled Jacob to ask his sons to go again into Egypt to buy food. He did so even though, after the apparent loss of Joseph, his affections clung to Benjamin with all the strength of a mother's love and he was unwilling to let Benjamin go.
