Hosea 8:1
Set the trumpet to thy mouth. He shall come as an eagle against the house of the LORD, because they have transgressed my covenant, and trespassed against my law. Set the trumpet to thy mouth. He shall come as an eagle against the house of the LORD, because they have transgressed my covenant, and trespassed against my law.
Set the trumpet to the mouth is an urgent warning that because covenant has been transgressed and law trespassed against, an enemy shall come against the house of the Lord like an eagle, swiftly, suddenly, forcefully and fiercely. The guilt of those who have received light yet reject truth and disobey the commandments is thereby exposed, and judgment cannot be avoided. The breach charged includes rejecting the Lord's Sabbath and accepting and exalting Sunday as a rival sabbath, repeating Adam's sin.
Its setting portrays Israel treating God's law as a foreign thing though it had been given to them, claiming to know God while hastening after another god, hiding iniquity in the heart and loving unrighteous paths. The verse depicts the condition of the professed people of God just before the second advent and the close of probation. Professing to know God does not excuse disobedience and unfaithful conduct.
To such false professors the coming day of the Lord will be great and very terrible, darkness and not light with no brightness in it, which they cannot abide because He is too pure to behold evil, bringing searching judgment and punishment rather than deliverance. The warning calls those entrusted with God's work to put matters in order and calls those who have received light but reject truth and disobey the commandments to reform their lives, with those who teach falsehood instead of truth facing especially severe judgment. In the last days the warning applies when human laws are exalted above God's law, and those loyal to God's commandments will face unjust courts and persecution, especially for refusing to honor a humanly appointed day in place of the fourth commandment.
