Jeremiah 44:1

In this verse the term Jews designates the people of the kingdom of Judah after the separation of the ten tribes. The verse introduces a message addressed to all the Jews dwelling in Egypt, specifically those at Migdol, at Tahpanhes, at Noph, and in the country of Pathros. The chapter belongs in the closing sequence of the book after the fall of Jerusalem and the prophet's later work. In chronological order it stands after chapters 40-43 and chapter 43 and before chapter 46.
That closing portion recounts the prophet's experiences in Egypt and includes prophecies concerning Egypt. Those addressed were the remnant left after Zedekiah's captivity who asked the prophet for advice while wanting only counsel that agreed with their own wishes and purposes, having become unable to discern between right and wrong. Against counsel to remain in the land under the protection of the king of Babylon, who highly esteemed the prophet, they chose to go down into Egypt, where many fell into idolatry. In response the prophet faithfully exposed the secrets of their hearts and declared the futility of their plans by prophesying the defeat of Egypt, even pointing out the very place in the capital of Egypt where Nebuchadnezzar would set his standard.
