Jeremiah 5:1
Run ye to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem, and see now, and know, and seek in the broad places thereof, if ye can find a man, if there be any that executeth judgment, that seeketh the truth; and I will pardon it. Run ye to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem, and see now, and know, and seek in the broad places thereof, if ye can find a man, if there be any that executeth judgment, that seeketh the truth; and I will pardon it.
A city stands answerable when a search through its streets and broad places cannot find even one man who executes judgment and seeks the truth, for if such a man could be found God would pardon it. The verse describes those who refuse to receive the truth. That searching exposes a people who swear falsely by the living Lord, who refuse to grieve when stricken and refuse correction when consumed, who make their faces harder than a rock and refuse to return, and who do not know the way of the Lord nor the judgment of their God.
It calls for reformation among those who claim to understand their Bibles and to be children of God but are not doers of the Word, showing that a thorough change must be wrought in them. It applies to people long in the truth whose ministry has become perverted, showing that religious service without a just and faithful influence does not save others.
