Job 5:1

Call now, if there be any that will answer thee; and to which of the saints wilt thou turn?

The saying stands in Eliphaz's speech to Job and Job's reply to him, where Eliphaz presses Job not to despise God's chastening while Job vindicates his complaining. In it Eliphaz dares Job to call out and see if any will answer him, and to consider to which of the holy ones he could turn. It belongs to the wider contention of Job's friends over the cause of human suffering. That contention wrongly insists that Job's affliction is caused by his sin and displays their readiness to misjudge him. Though their words are preserved in Scripture, not all they assert is true, for statements true in general were misapplied to Job and expressed only their own wisdom and observation rather than a trustworthy account of his suffering. Eliphaz's utterance carries no authority merely by standing in the book of Job, but must be tried by inspired Scripture, because he did not speak what was true about God or about Job.
