Joshua 12:1
Now these are the kings of the land, which the children of Israel smote, and possessed their land on the other side Jordan toward the rising of the sun, from the river Arnon unto mount Hermon, and all the plain on the east: Now these are the kings of the land, which the children of Israel smote, and possessed their land on the other side Jordan toward the rising of the sun, from the river Arnon unto mount Hermon, and all the plain on the east:
Joshua 12:1 opens a longer list, running through verse 24, of the kings and places Israel had overcome in battle. It identifies the territory east of the Jordan toward the sunrise that Israel had struck down and possessed, stretching from the river Arnon to Mount Hermon and including all the plain on the east. It belongs to the account of the division and settling of the Promised Land among the tribes.
That division of the land took place about five years after Israel crossed the Jordan. That same account also shows Israel's lack of faith and slowness in taking possession. It ends with the assurance that God wrought all He had promised and none of His good word failed.
