Joshua 16:1

And the lot of the children of Joseph fell from Jordan by Jericho, unto the water of Jericho on the east, to the wilderness that goeth up from Jericho throughout mount Beth-el,

Joshua 16:1 belongs to the account of the division and settling of the Promised Land among the tribes, recording the lot that fell to the children of Joseph. That division of the land and conquering of the Canaanites comes after Achan's sin.

The word lot denotes the providentially determined allotment or portion of land given to Joseph's descendants, decided by lot in dividing the land. The Hebrew word so translated, meaning a portion or outcome determined by lot, is distinct from the Hebrew word meaning a region or inheritance territory.

The boundary ran from the Jordan by Jericho to the water of Jericho on the east, and westward through the wilderness going up to Mount Bethel and its hill country. The account shows Israel's lack of faith and slowness in possessing the land, yet that God accomplished all that He had promised.
