Joshua 17:1

There was also a lot for the tribe of Manasseh; for he was the firstborn of Joseph; to wit, for Machir the firstborn of Manasseh, the father of Gilead: because he was a man of war, therefore he had Gilead and Bashan.

Joshua 17:1 stands after the account of Achan's sin and its consequences, within the account of conquering the Canaanites and dividing the land. It belongs to the description of the distribution of the land, which rested on written records accurately describing the properties.

The word lot denotes the assigned share or allotted territory given to Manasseh. It means an inheritance determined by lot, and the verse is one of the Old Testament examples showing that a lot could determine a tribe's inheritance. The portion so assigned was providentially determined. This sense of lot as an allotment determined by lot is distinct from another Hebrew word translated region, country, or inheritance portion and lot of inheritance.

The verse records the allotment of land to the tribe of Manasseh. Machir was the firstborn of Manasseh and the father of Gilead. Machir received Gilead and Bashan because he was a man of war.
