Judges 14:1

And Samson went down to Timnath, and saw a woman in Timnath of the daughters of the Philistines.

Timnath was a town of the Philistines, and the woman Samson saw there was a Philistine, one of the daughters of Israel's idolatrous enemies. In his youth he began associating with those ungodly and licentious people, venturing among them and exposing himself to temptation he could have avoided. God had given him favorable conditions and called him to honor God in important service according to a divine mission. In choosing a wife from among them he followed personal desire and ungoverned passion instead of seeking God's purpose with reason and reverence for God. Those ties with idolaters were contrary to his calling, darkened his life and hindered his mission, and put him on a wrong path that led to shame, disaster, and death.
