Judges 2:1
And an angel of the LORD came up from Gilgal to Bochim, and said, I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you unto the land which I sware unto your fathers; and I said, I will never break my covenant with you. And an angel of the LORD came up from Gilgal to Bochim, and said, I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you unto the land which I sware unto your fathers; and I said, I will never break my covenant with you.
The angel of the Lord who came up from Gilgal to Bochim is Jesus Christ, the Son of God, equal with God. In this verse he declares that he himself made Israel go up out of Egypt and brought them into the land which he swore to their fathers. His declaration that he will never break his covenant with them was conditional on their obedience, which required making no agreements with the inhabitants of the land and throwing down their altars.
Israel failed that condition by not obeying his voice, for they did not dispossess the heathen, they spared their altars, and they joined them in degrading practices. For that disobedience he rebuked them at Bochim and warned that those remaining inhabitants would remain as a snare to them.
His words led the people to weep, repent, confess their sin, and offer sacrifices to God. Their repentance was genuine so that God forgave them, and the revival brought reform for a time, though their later departure from God showed that the seed of evil remained. Their disobedience left them under the power of their oppressors, and they even abandoned the deliverer God raised up instead of following him toward freedom.
