Matthew 11:1

And it came to pass, when Jesus had made an end of commanding his twelve disciples, he departed thence to teach and to preach in their cities.

When Jesus had finished giving His commands to the twelve disciples, He left that place to teach and to preach in their cities, carrying forward His own work of ministry. His departure was not a withdrawal but a continuation, as He Himself went on laboring in teaching and preaching after the instruction of the twelve was complete. The works He performed in that ongoing ministry became widely known, so that reports of what He was doing spread beyond where He labored. Those reports reached John in prison, brought to him by his own disciples who had heard of the works of Christ.
