Proverbs 30:1

The words of Agur the son of Jakeh, even the prophecy: the man spake unto Ithiel, even unto Ithiel and Ucal,

The opening line marks chapter 30 as the words of Agur the son of Jakeh. Agur's identity is unknown. It places this chapter in the later part of Proverbs, separate from the proverbs ascribed to Solomon and from Hezekiah's collection.

The book thus contains material credited to authors besides Solomon, and chapter 30 may have been written by someone other than Solomon. Yet Solomon himself may still have written it. Those who hold that he did teach that he may have used another name to make its lessons more striking.

Some of this later material may have been copied by later kings from scattered writings of Solomon. These later proverbs are good. Their short, condensed sayings are to be read slowly and thoughtfully rather than hurried over.
